VCM Misfire Fun

Hey Everyone-

I've got a 2011 EX-L that just hit 197,000 miles. I was driving on the Interstate, felt some lurching, and got the flashing CEL and traction light. Pulled over and had it towed to a Honda dealer. They put it on the computer and the service guy brings out an oily plug from cylinder 3 and tells me that I have "ring slippage". Tells me that I need an engine rebuild for $6K.
It was running fine, with really no excessive oil consumption (I've always used good oil). Is this really the necessary fix, or is the dealer just trying to make some bucks?

In 2013 a class-action lawsuit was filed against Honda, 1.6 million vehicles between 2008-2013 had been identified having potential for high oil consumption and misfires due to VCM Operation on 3.5L V6 Engines. Honda extended the warranty for these vehicles but did not correct the problem. This did not include the millions of vehicles between 2005-2007 that also had the same defective issues and had owners complaining of repeated failure of costly motor mounts to VCM operation, damaged transmission torque converters, fouled spark plugs and excessive oil consumption at the rate of up to 1 qt for every 1000 miles. Honda claimed this was normal.

What vehicles did this affect?

Supported Models: 3.5L V6 I-VTEC (2005-2020)
2005-2006 Honda Odyssey
2007 Honda Accord

2008+ Honda Accord
2010+ Honda Crosstour
2017+ Honda Ridgeline
2019+ Honda Passport
2013+ Acura TLX
2013+ Acura MDX

There are many devices talked about on this board like SVCM and VCM Tuner that would likely have saved your engine. One of the first things i did with my 2012 Crosstour V6 was to install a VCMTuner. This will slightly cause lower MPG, but it will prevent the engine rings from going bad. I hate to tell you this, but you should have installed one of these devices. I bought a new Acura TLX and I added one of these VCMTuners the first week after I got it. Unfortunately, 197,000 miles is a LOT OF MILES, so likely they will offer you nothing. But it is worth asking. Let us know how things work out.

I am not up to date on what the current status of the class action law suit. If you have been a VERY GOOD customer with your Honda dealer, they might cut you a deal, perhaps a 50/50 payment where you pay half and Honda will pay the other half. This is called a Customer Good Will Adjustment. Keep in mind that ONLY the Service Manager can make this deal. Don't waste your time speaking with the service advisor - they have no power to do this.

It's a Crosstour. And I'm aware of the VCM issues in these cars and the suppressors, although up till now I didn't know of the affect on the oil rings. But my question is if a total engine rebuild is the necessary fix?

And I'll beg to differ; 197,000 miles shouldn't be a lot on a Honda. We sold our 91 Civic with 357,000 miles and my CRV is still going with 370,000 miles.

2011 with 197K miles, sounds pretty good that the engine has held up to this point. Have no real input into the issue you are experiencing with your Crosstour. Impressive regarding your other vehicles with over 250K. My 2011 Crosstour has 97K miles, I do a regular oil change, and maintenance (typical stuff) replace plugs, timing belt, valve adjustment, CV joint replaced, and I run a VCM Tuner to disable the VCM. I would like to think I could get to 200K plus on my Crosstour. I like the Crosstour, it is unique even though it is an "Accord Hatchback"

I've come to terms with what needs to be done on my Crosstour. I really do love it. I was planning on the whole timing belt, water pump replacement soon, until the VCM misfire came. Once it's back on its feet, I'll be sure to get a VCM tuner; I'm glad that you've got one in yours.
