How do you download numbers into the hands free link period? I did not know you could do that... I thought you had to say the number every time so I just look for the names with my phone...

Your phone has to be compatible and paired to the car, then - read the Owner's Manual - ALL is revealed!! FYI - it also makes a difference whether Driver 1 or Driver 2's key is in the ignition!!

Phonebook download is a bit weird, since it's done through navigation menus rather than phone menus. So even when it is downloaded, to access it, you go through the navigation menus to make a call using those numbers. For instance, if you press the talk button on the steering wheel for the handfreelink, you can't access the downloaded phone book. You have to access it using the navigation button. There is a separate phonebook in your handfreelink menus that you enter phonenumbers through a voice menu.

Does anyone know how to combine your downloaded phonebook to your car's internal phonebook?

You can import them... I believe you find the contact in the downloaded phonebook, than "import" it to the handsfree link...

But I did it a while ago and can't recall it off the top of my head.

(When you import them, it asks you to speak the name, and that's how it learns them for voice commands.)

I only took the time to do my top 10 numbers. Anything else I can initiate the call on my phone and the BT will take over from there.

And as stated earlier... I'm sure the process for doing all of this is outlined in the manual.

It still sounds like you have to have the Nav system to download the entire phone book from your phone. My phone is paired, but I don't think I can download all my numbers without the Nav system.

The manual specifies "on models with navigation system" when talking about uploading the phonebook from your phone.

The uploaded phonebook is stored in your navigation phonebook. This is an entirely different "phonebook" than the HFL phonebook.

I didn't catch this the first time I read the manual, but as Xaq wrote, you can import numbers from your cellphone to the HFL phonebook. The manual doesn't specify if this is only available with nav system. It just says that only certain phones are compatible.

P. 272 owners manual
Hit the HFL talk button. Say "phonebook"
After prompt, say "recieve contact"
Follow prompts to select and store phone number.

Hopefully this will work without the nav system.

IF you have a nav system, and you downloaded your cell's phonebook, you can directly add the number to HFL. Just choose the phone number from your cellular phone menu and push the selector knob to the right when you see "store in hands free link". p. 267 owners manual.

I've been struggling with this myself this week. The key is whether or not the phone is "compatible" and then it is one contact at a time. Press HFL, Say "Phonebook Receive Contact". Then the car prompts you to send the contact from your phone. My iPhone4 couldn't do it, though. I gave in and just set up my top ten or so numbers the long way.
Press HFL and say, "Phonebook Add" and follow the voice prompts to setup your phone book.
