I have a 2012 Honda cross tour. I love the car. But, this could’ve been a major problem. Not sure if this had anything to do with getting the car cleaned the day before this happened, but it happened. We were going out of town to a remote area. We stopped at a gas station and could not get the gas door to open. Luckily, we found someone to take off the front panel which pops off. Then I believe they stuck a flat head screwdriver in to the hole and had to push very hard on the plastic part to get it to open. Try to protect your car by putting something underneath the screwdriver. Thank goodness it got opened.
now, at least we could get gas. But the metal pen was out and could not be pushed in with any kind of way. We even found the release in the truck. The release is underneath a little cover towards the driver side of the hatchback. You can try pulling on the lever inside, but ours would not ever release.
I went to the Honda dealership. They told me it would cost about $500 to get it fixed with a new actuator. Unless you want your gas cover to be locked you do not even need this feature. This happens to be a faulty feature in the Honda cross tour.
I tried going to many auto shops to help me and I ended up at a locksmith. The locksmith tried many ways to cut off the metal pin. He could not get it cut off.
so, the easiest solution was to just cut off the plastic part so that it would not hit the metal piece. You can probably do this on your own. This is a permanent solution to not having this ever happen again. If you want to make sure you have your gas cap locked just buy a locking gas cap. You also might be careful when you go through a car wash because it could push the door open. I might just put a little bit of Velcro to hold it shut.
I was very surprised that no one else had ever suggested this, but you may as well go on and do it before this ever happens to you and you get stuck , and you run out of gas and you still can’t get the door open.
I hope this will help someone.
