Hello, I just lost my 2012 Honda Accord totaled by a careless driver. Loved the car and possibly looking to replace with another one and continue to be part of this forum. I have found a 2010 EX-L allegedly one previous owner and low mileage. I have heard a lot of issues with 2010, especially oil/engine type issues and wondering what the general consensus is regarding the car and if worth investing in it. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Sorry for your loss.

I bought a 2010 new (meticulously maintained) and sold it when the dreaded misfire codes starting appearing on a more frequent basis.

Bought a late 2013 maybe 4 months before Covid took off and it has been awesome.

The J35Y V-6 motor and 6-speed transmission were a big plus (and get far better gas mileage for sure).

Liked the looks of 2010-2012 better but 2013 and later models have some improvements that are worth considering in my opinion.

Unless you can verify that the dealer had taken care of the VCM issue on a 2010 to 2012, I would avoid it. The owner may have added a device that deactivates the VCM, but hopefully it was done early on. I have a 2010 EX-L v6 that had the VCM issue taken care of by the dealer at about 70k miles. I'm currently at 210k miles and it still runs beautifully. If I could buy another Crosstour, I'd look for a 2015 v6 with as few miles on it as possible. I think the chance of getting an earlier model with the VCM issue is too big of a deal-breaker for me. It seems like the problems that pop up on the 2nd gen models are not nearly as bad as having to rebuild part of your engine because of premature cylinder ring wear.

Also, what edubfromktown says about the 6-speed and some extra bells and whistles is good too.

Sorry just to clarify, the 2015 does not have the same VCM type 6 cyl engine or you are saying it does but the issues are not as common as with the 2010 or older models. Thanks.

Hello,

Honda fixed the VCM always using the same three cylinders on the 2013 model and up.

3.5-liter J35Z2 V6 (2010-12)
3.5-liter J35Y1 V6 (2013-15)

" autoblog.com Oct 23rd 2013

Automotive News reports that Honda has agreed to settle a massive class-action lawsuit brought against it for engine trouble potentially affecting nearly 1.6 million vehicles. The lawsuit includes Accord (2008-12), Odyssey (2008-13), Pilot (2009-13) and Crosstour (2010-13) models equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 with Variable Cylinder Management, which might experience engine misfire, excessive oil burning and premature spark plug fouling issues.
"

Hope this helps.

Do you remember If the dealership brought the issue up first or not? I see some dealer maintained ones with service history and want to call to double check but did they make it a protocol to inform and fix if wanted ?

My check engine light started flashing and the car began running like garbage. I had to have it flat-bedded to the dealership. So essentially, the car brought it up. I doubt the dealer would do anything unless the issue was brought to their attention. My Carfax report says nothing about major engine work being done. The only way I can tell when it was done is by the fact that it says "Timing Belt Replaced" because I asked them to do that while they were in there and half the engine was apart. You can also look for "Drivability/performance checked", which shows up in three reports during that time.

That's about all I can find that might be an indication that the VCM service was done without having the service receipts. I have them somewhere. If I can find them, I'll share what was done.

I hope that helps.
