A friend had this problem and it was the starter gear on the starter. To resolve the problem Honda replaced the starter. Repair time about 1.5 hour. Not a big deal.

Glad you are getting it fixed.... but why I am responding to is the irony of the comment on the Rouge.. The irony is the fast shifting transmission has no gear ratios.... it is a CVT. The shifting you feel is an artificial bump to resemble ratios changing. Not a negative because I actually like CVT's from Honda and Nissan.

Wish I had known this was an issue. I do get a the grind noise, (pretty bad during the winter and the car has been left outside for sometime) otherwise it doesn't seem too terrible. I assumed this was just how push button starters sounded.

My car is about a year out of warranty. Anyone know what the damage may be driving like this for a while? I plan on just waiting till the starter needs to be replaced to get it fixed.

Default push button grind on startup

This seems to be addressed in Honda TSB A16-002. This appears to effect the V6 models.

Bulletin Date: Aug. 11, 2017 Component: Automatic transmission torque converter. Bulletin Summary: Service bulletin - the starter grinds or spins at startup. The clearance between the starter motor gear and the torque converter ring gear is not optimal. Vehicles covered in this TSB: 2013 Honda Accord, 2014 Honda Accord, 2015 Honda Accord, 2016 Honda Accord, 2013 Honda Crosstour, 2014 Honda Crosstour, 2015 Honda Crosstour.

My 2013 EXL-NAV has been doing the grind intermittently for a couple years now. It's never failed to start eventually, but it does present a little embarrassment if I'm parked where there's a lot of people.

I've spoken with my local Honda dealer, and there's nothing they will do about that TSB for my out-of-warranty CT. I have also looked into replacing the starter myself, but since it's primarily an annoyance it is lower on the list than anything else that comes up.

Well that answers my question...I started to have the same embarrassing choking sound and it happened recently. I just bought my 2014 Honda CT and no problems till maybe about 6 months ago. So if I read correctly the dealer wont do anything about it ? If that's the case are there any complications installing it myself that I should know about?

My dealer quoted me about $800 for the fix. These seems excessive for design flaw. Can anyone recommend a reputable Honda repair facility in the Long Beach/Orange Co. So. Cal area? As it covers basically all V6 engines between 2013 and 2015, it would appear to be a widespread problem.

You obviously don't have to take it to a Honda dealer for non-warranty repairs. I checked with Yelp for the top 10 independent repair shops that specialize in Honda in the Long Beach area and here is the link. https://www.yelp.com/search?find_des...ng+Beach%2C+CA

I have 95,600 on my 2013 CT EX L. Just had the starter replaced for the second time; first one was replaced under warranty TSB. Dealer quoted $800. Had it done at an independent shop for $480. Love my CT but not a happy camper with this experience. Don’t know of anyone needing to replace two starters on any vehicle at this mileage.
It appears that the gear mechanism in the starter was not engaging with engine. Still fuming!
